CARBONITRIDING

Thermochemical treatment to which a ferrous alloy is subjected, the temperature being maintained in a suitable atmosphere, to obtain a surface enrichment in carbon and nitrogen, elements which diffuse towards the interior of the part. This is usually followed by quench hardening.
