NITRIDING

Thermochemical treatment to which a metallic material is subjected, the temperature maintenance (generally below Ac1 for steels) being carried out in a suitable medium in order to obtain surface enrichment in nitrogen. Nitriding results in an increase in surface hardness if the alloying elements allow it, and an improvement in fatigue and friction properties.
